I thought I'd done more than enough planning in the year before I left, to be comfortable and secure after the army. How wrong could I be...
I'd done more than the resettlement programme suggested, and so it was a punch in the gut sort of shock when all my plans fell apart almost immediately. And people were depending on me to support them...
I just didn't get it! Why was I so far out of step? Why was the transition after the army so complicated?
And it wasn't just the big things that threw me, like having the job I'd thought was in the bag just disappear on my first day out. It was the little things, like this...
The first day I turned up for my new job as a civilian working for a medical supplies company, I was the only one who arrived on time! When this happened the next day as well, I started wondering if there was something I was missing. Even worse, the daily work plans hardly ever got started, let alone executed. The boss just decided to do something else instead. It was all so alien.
Can you imagine this happening with Part 1 Orders?
No wonder so many blokes drop out, end up homeless or with a broken marriage after the army. But I decided that was not going to happen to me.
Being in the army makes you special and different, and I wanted to know how to use my skills. I wanted to understand why my army training and discipline made me feel out of kilter instead of strong. And most importantly, I needed to find out how I could could get my life right back on track. I was proud of my term served and I decided right there and then that not only was I going to do well in my new job, but that I was going to run my own business as well.
I spent the next 6 years and over £6,500 on mentoring, and worked and studied with business leaders, copywriters, marketers, direct sellers and personal development specialists. I have taken the strategies I learnt from Internet Marketer Tracy Repchuk (Rated Top 20 in the world at the latest Social Media Summit in London) and International Speaker, Trainer and Business Consultant Alan Forrest Smith. For our programmes we've sifted out the tactics which work for growing a business after the army.
Today I feel happy and confident and wake up each morning looking forward to the day. It's fantastic spending every day doing what you love and helping people after the army is my dream come true.
